"On August 29, 2003 our Piper Cherokee suffered an engine failure on the downwind leg of the circuit at Qualicum Beach [CAT4]. I was able to make the runway, but only just, touching down at 10:32. Two fellow pilots who heard my radio broadcast whilst working in their hangar rushed to the runway to help move the aircraft to the apron. It was apparent from the fuel dripping from the lower cowling onto the ground that the carburettor had been flooding.
One of these Good Samaritans had Don Nikkel’s telephone number to hand and he called Don on my behalf to request Valley Aero’s assistance. Pilots on the airport lent me tools, and I removed the engine cowling.
Back in Langley, our base airport, Valley Aero procured a serviceable carburettor and convinced a FTU instructor to fly a Valley Aero AME to Qualicum Beach with the replacement carburettor in an FTU aircraft. The Valley Aero AME landed at CAT4 about two hours later, and he set to work, removing the unserviceable carburettor, fitting and testing the newly installed carburettor, and then replacing the cowling. I took off from CAT4 in our repaired Cherokee at 14:12, and made an uneventful return flight to Langley Regional Airport.
I regard this as excellent service by Valley Aero, and it is typical of the service that we have received since 2002, when we became aircraft owners."
